Eulogy for a Wife: Template & Opening Lines
A eulogy for your wife is the hardest speech a person can give. Aim only for true — the room will hold everything else.
The structure
1
The moment you met her
Tell it exactly — what she wore, what she said, how certain or terrified you were. It's the story your family will retell forever.
2
What she actually did
The invisible architecture she built: the household, the friendships, the calendar, the care. Name the unnamed work; it is the truest tribute.
3
Her brilliance beyond the family
Career, art, community, faith — one story where the room sees her shine in her own right.
4
Close with the vow completed
'Till death do us part' has now been kept. Say what of her you will carry — then say goodbye in whatever words are yours.
Opening lines that work
“She walked into the room, and — as everyone who ever met her knows — that was that.”
“I've been given many titles in my life, but 'her husband' was the only one I ever bragged about.”
“For thirty-eight years I got to watch the kindest person I've ever known operate at close range.”
Before you stand up
- Write it in one sitting, badly, then edit — a rough draft that exists beats a perfect one that doesn't.
- Include her voice: one thing she always said, delivered the way she said it.
- Arrange a hand-signal with the celebrant in case you need them to take over; you likely won't, but knowing steadies you.
