Eulogy for a Grandmother: Template & Opening Lines

Eulogies for grandmothers live in the senses — the kitchen smells, the soft hands, the unconditional welcome. Start there.

The structure

1

Open in her house

Take the room to her kitchen table or her chair by the window. Grandmothers are places as much as people.

2

Her love, made specific

The five-dollar notes in birthday cards, the extra serving you couldn't refuse, the way she remembered every friend's name.

3

Her story before you

A grandmother lived whole lifetimes before you arrived — honor a chapter of it: the migration, the war years, the dance halls.

4

Close with her legacy in the room

Point to it literally: children, grandchildren, recipes, faith, stubbornness. 'Look around — she made all of this.'

Opening lines that work

Nan's front door was never locked, and neither was any part of her heart.
My grandmother measured love in food, and by that measure we were the richest family on earth.
Everyone in this room has eaten at her table — that was the price and the privilege of knowing her.

Before you stand up

  • Collect one memory from each grandchild beforehand and weave in two or three — it becomes everyone's eulogy.
  • Don't skip her early life; the room's older generation will treasure hearing it told.
  • Keep it to 4–6 minutes; warmth, not length.
