Eulogy for a Grandfather: Template & Opening Lines
A grandfather's eulogy honors two men at once: the one the older generation knew, and the gentler one his grandchildren got.
The structure
1
The two versions of him
The formidable man from the old photos, and the soft touch who slipped you sweets. Naming both is the tribute.
2
His hands and his work
What he built, farmed, fixed, drove, or served. Grandfathers of his era spoke through work; describe it concretely.
3
The wisdom, verbatim
Quote him exactly, bad grammar and all. His actual words will do more than any polished summary.
4
Close with the long view
What his century looked like, and what of him continues — the surname, the values, the walnut tree he planted.
Opening lines that work
“My grandfather built things that lasted — including this family.”
“Pop had two settings: working, and pretending he wasn't tired from working.”
“By the time I knew him, the hard years had sanded him gentle — but the stories tonight will tell you what he was made of.”
Before you stand up
- Interview the eldest relatives before writing; you will learn stories you never heard.
- One object can carry the whole eulogy — his hat, his tools, his chair.
- Slow down when you speak; grandfathers' eulogies are heard by the hard-of-hearing front row.
