Eulogy for a Mother: Template & Opening Lines
A eulogy for your mother doesn't need to summarize her whole life — it needs to show the room who she was to you.
The structure
1
Open with her, not with grief
One image or moment that is unmistakably her — at the stove, in the garden, on the phone dispensing advice nobody asked for.
2
What she taught you
Two or three lessons, each anchored to a real memory. Lessons carry a mother's voice forward better than praise does.
3
Who she was beyond 'Mum'
Her friendships, work, courage, humor — let the room meet the whole woman.
4
Close with what remains
The recipes, the sayings, the way you now catch yourself doing what she did. End by speaking to her, or for everyone: 'Thank you, Mum.'
Opening lines that work
“My mother had a saying for everything — and standing here, I finally understand most of them.”
“If you ever ate at my mother's table, you already know everything important about her.”
“Mum never once let me leave the house hungry, worried, or wondering whether I was loved.”
Before you stand up
- Aim for 3–5 minutes (roughly 500–800 written words).
- One honest, specific story is worth ten generalities.
- It is completely acceptable to cry, pause, or hand the page to someone else — the room is with you.
